Enlistment date COMPLETE
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 13:39 BST (UK) »
Hi all
does anyone know how I can find out my GFathers enlistment date.  I know he enlisted in ENFIELD.  Frederick Jesse Coster Mills 54th Div Middx Regiment Army cyclist coy.  I know where and when he died but I would love to know his joining date.

My father (born 1915)says he never saw his dad so I wonder if he was in the army from 1914 until 30th Oct 1918 when de died.
Cheers

Hi Peter

I think there is a very good chance that Frederick did see his son, but the son would have been too young to remember. Here is his medal index card, and the clues are in the information that is not given.

He did not receive either the 1914 Star or the 1914-1915 Star and therefore he did not leave the UK until 1916 or later.

You could wait for Ancestry to publish WW1 Service Records for surnames beginning “M”, and hope that his papers survive. In the meantime, if you get no joy here you could ask on the Great War Forum in the hope that an ACC expert can tell you when the number 21469 was allocated. I would put "Army Cyclist Corps" in the question title to attract the right audience.

Ken

Hi Ken
thanks for that, yes you are most likley right about my Father just being to young to remember.  Will do as you recomend and go to the Great War Forum.
All the best and good luck in all you do.

Hi
The numbers next to his medal entitlement relate to actual Roll books held at the NA. Its possible the Roll itself should give an enlistment date and date he went overseas.
You will however have to pay for a look up researcher or go yourself as they arent online :(
Alternatively check for any similar service numbers and same regiment on the ones already online Service Records should give you a close date of enlistment.
