1851, 1841 or 1861 lookup please
« on: Tuesday 18 January 05 21:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Please would sks look up any of these siblings taken from a family bible and all probably born in Mangotsfield but perhaps in Bitton, Oldland, Kingsland or St George - all appear to be dead by the 1871 census & none are in the 1851 censuses of Mangotsfield or Bitton:

Isaac BIRD b.16 Oct 1785, d.17 Sep 1856, spouse Mary
Mary BIRD b. 21 Feb 1788 - spouse, if any, unknown
George BIRD b. 16th Jun 1790
Charles BIRD b. 10 Aug 1795
William BIRD b. 9 Jun 1798
Love BIRD b.28 Dec 1801
Samuel BIRD b.12 Jun 1803
Thomas BIRD b.31 Jan 1806
James BIRD b.about 1807
Joseph BIRD b.about 1808

Isaac was definitely born in Mangotsfield and lived in St George around 1851 census, so he should be in that one.

Thank you.

Take care,
Paul

Hi!
I found a James Bird with the correct age in 1851 (in St. Briavels):

46
BIRD James 44 Forgeman St. Briavels
Debra 30 St. Briavels
Ann 10 St. Briavels
Lucy 7 St. Briavels
Howard 2 St. Briavels

I can't find Isaac.  :(

Cheers

Thanks for your efforts, Markus - they're much appreciated.

This James may be one of mine. The family rumour is that these children's father, James BIRD, was an engineer on the railways and that each child was born at a different station along the track. I know that at least one was born in Mangotsfield and another was probably in Bitton, although I'm not sure. I gather that the line in Bitton has been pulled up. Do you or anyone else know whether there was ever a line from Mangotsfield through Bitton to St. Briavels?

They were all non-conformists and the IGI is no help at all.

Thanks again.

Take care,
Paul

I found an old railway called the Avon Valley Railway, which goes from Bath to Bristol:

I don't really know where Bath is (I live in Sweden). :P

This is a fantastic site, Marcus, thanks. I see that it's built too late for James BIRD to have worked on it and so the family rumour must be false. However it goes through all the places that my ancestors came from Mangotsfield, Bitton, Oldland Common ... It must have made such a difference to people's lives and opened up vast tracts of the country that were previously isolated.

Take care,
Paul

This may be the marriage of their father James BIRD and Ann ILES (taken from IGI):
7 nov 1783 in St Marys, Bitton, Gloucestershire.

And this can be Samuel Bird's burial in Mangotsfield:

Surname  First name  Abode          Date of burial   Age   Parish where buried
Samuel BIRD of Kingswood   bd Mangotsfield 8 Mar 1829 age 25

And maybe Thomas Bird's burial in Mangotsfield:

Thomas BIRD of Kingswood bd2 nov 1845  Mangotsfield age 40
There are quite many buried persons with the surname BIRD, look for yourself:
http://www.bafhs.org.uk/burialindex/burialsbig1.htm

I'll try to find more.

Wow, Marcus, this is incredible - thank you so much.

I had previously thought that James was married to a Sylvia Priscilla BRYANT but the marriage date was in the year after Isaac's birth (possible, of course) but this James BIRD & Ann ILES were married a little under 2 years before Isaac's birth which makes it sligthly more likely. Sylvia Priscilla would also be the only occurance of the names Sylvia & Priscilla in that branch of my family which is littered with the name Ann. It definitely needs more work!

This is almost certainly my Isaac - his age, location and profession are bang on. The other Isaac and William are defiitely  his children - I know that Isaac Jnr was a grocer and William a market gardener. I don't know about John though Mary might be a relative.

The burials look good too.  Samuel, particularly is the right age and worth a visit to the Mangotsfield graveyard. Thomas should have been 39 on 2 Nov 1845, but he was in his 40th year and would have been 40 in a couple of months so it could be him. This Thomas will be in the 1841 census so I'll trawl around for that. Shame that Samuel died so young - Thomas too.

They were all Methodists which makes it more difficult, but their marriages should show up in parish records.

Thanks for all your efforts. You've been amazingly helpful.

Take care,
Paul
