PAF help needed please
« on: Friday 16 May 08 12:14 BST (UK) »
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this - I suppose I'm after technical help. But here goes.

I store all my information on the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) program provided by Family Search, the Morman site. As I have a good few years work, I always back up my work regularly, on disc and memory stick, as well as the hard drive.  A few months ago I was horrified to discover I could not open the files on my computer (it had been giving us other problems). After reinstalling the PAF files, all has been well. Yesterday I downloaded my up-to-date  file on to my memory stick. When I tried to open it, it could not be opened. I tried downloding onto disc; again it could not be opened from the disc. The program could still be opened directly from my computer. However, trying this morning, I cannot get the file to open from the computer!! Can someone explain to me what might be going wrong.

Thank You,
Gill

Don't panic.  There is a PAF help site and they respond rather quickly.

Do you mean you cannot open your file from your memory stick when you want to reload it back onto your computer and into the paf programme?

Can you tell us if you get any sort of warning or message when the file won't open or is it a case of dead as the proverbial dodo.

It could be a permissions thing, especially if you are getting a message like:

You are not authorised or File is full or cannot be read.

If that is the case then you may need to acquire ownership of the file by logging in as the Administrator and changing the Security settings for this file.

If you can open other PAF files on your computer then it does sound like there is a permissions problem with this particular file.

Let us know what error message you are getting and what operating system you are using.

Hi Gill

I get this problem too and the way I overcome this is to click on "my computer" and navigate to where the file is saved on the computer.
In my case this is C:\Program Files\FamilySearch\Paf5\web
Click the icon that represents your saved file ???.paf and PAF5 opens normally. Until the next time you save to another location.
