1841 census Pope- Welwyn
« on: Wednesday 19 January 05 09:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm a bit stuck with my Pope family from Hertfordshire at the moment and was wondering if somebody might be kind enough to see if any of the following appear  on the 1841 census for Welwyn village:

Ephraim Pope b. 1825 in Welwyn
Thomas Pope (father of Ephraim) b.? in ?
Ann Pope (wife of Thomas)b,? in ?

Other children of Thomas and Ann are:
Mary Pope chr 1818
Henry Pope chr 1817
Charles Terry Chr. 1815
Sarah Pope Chr. 1814
but they would probably be too old in 1841 to be living at home I guess.

I know that Ephraim moved to Clfton Beds. by 1849 but I was hoping that he might still be at home in 1841 and then I might get an idea of whether his parents were still alive then and if they come from Hertfordshire.

I don't know much about the indexing or not of the 1841 census, or how large Welwyn village was at that time just let me know if I'm asking the impossible.

Thanks,

Emily

Hi Emily
Can't help with 1841 I'm afraid but I've checked Welwyn in 1851 and there's not a Pope to be seen.

I've looked at Ephraim in 1861 at Clifton, and again in 1871 at Bermondsey, where his birthplace is given as Hertford, Herts in both instances.

Wow! I've just found Charles at Harrow public school in 1871, where he was a butler to the Headmaster. This family certainly moved around. Birthplace Welwyn age 55

regards

david

I have checked the 1841 census for Welwyn, but could not find any POPES.

Sorry

Hi Rick and David,

Thank you very much for spending time looking for Popes for me. It's much appreciated.
I guess I at least know where they weren't in 1841.
In the IGI I found some baptisms for Popes in Welwyn between 1842 and 1845, but they must have been people that moved there after the census.

I have also seen Ephraim describe his birthplace as Hertford, but had found a christening on the IGI for Bethel Independent, Welywn so had thought he meant Hertford as Hertfordshire. In 1901 he has it as Harford, Harfordshire so I guess he wasn't very literate.

I wonder if he must have moved to Bedforshire already by 1841 as there are at least a couple of Pope familys that seem to originate from the Biggleswade so maybe my Hertfordshire Popes are connected with them and just happened to spend a few years living in Welywn. I've always wondered why Ephraim moved to Clifton but perhaps he had relatives there.

Thanks for the info about Charles in the 1871 census. I hadn't been able to find him in any others yet. I don't suppose you might be able to tell me if he had any other family mambers with him (wife, kids...)? Or should I better first check which county Harrow is in and then do a new post.

Most of my ancestors seem to have moved around a fair bit and a lot gravitated to London in the end...I suppose to find work.

Thanks again for your help both of you,

Best regards,

Emily

Hi David,

Thank you so much for looking up all those Harwoods  and Popes for me. It certainly will help me a lot  with my Harwoods as I hadn't know the name of Emma's mother before or the ages of her parents and I can now match Emma up with her siblings on the later censuses. The Harwoods seem to be a bit less mobile than the Popes fortunately as there were still some of them around Clifton in 1891. I guess the John living nest door to Thomas in 1841 could well be his brother or at least cousin.

Best Wishes,

Emily
