Hi Rambler
The later dob is interesting.  There is A Hallet, Gnr, on the Brithdir Cenotaph and the only Hallet I could find in 1901 was the one aged 34.   My thoughts where either the dob is incorrect or he and the one inscribed on the memorial are one of the same.   If that was the case taking your 1891C dob would still make him 42+ to be in the war, but it is possible.

I can't see a birth for Alfred James HALLETT in Bristol around these dates - the closest I can see has middle name John:

Births Mar 1871
HALLETT    Alfred John
Bedminster 5c 773

This would match the 1891 census entry, but can't be the one you found in 1901, as Lucy's husband definitely has middle name James...  ???

I'll have another look at 1891!

Well, I've located Alfred John, confectioner, still with mum in 1901, so that completely rules him out.

Still loking in 1891....

Hi Rambler
I have located Fred J Hallett which could be [Alfred J. Hallet] on the 1881C of the right age [14] which could be him?

RG11/2490/84/35
23 Northcote St, Bristol St George, Gloucester

What do you think?

I can see the same lad as "Fred" aged 6 in 1871 - there's a possible birth registration for him:

Births Sep 1864

HALLETT    Fred Joseph
Bristol 6a 56

I can't see him after 1881, though, so can't be entirely sure...  ???
