I am trying to find out  where Mary Peninton and family lived in 1874 I have gone through all addresses on the assessment books sydney archives,the husband found in sydney 1861 but they were around Glebe later .Is there any way i can find their abode.I cannot get to Sydney to look up glebe Assesment books held at the council.Her husband was dead by this time  so there would have been about 8 children living with her.

Looking up Sands there is a Mrs Mary A Peninton Glebe 1890, 91,92
1890 44 Forsyth St Glebe
Also Christopher at Avon Lane Glebe

The earliest year for any Peninton in online Sands is 1888 - Christopher

I don't think women could vote until 1901, so electoral roles would probably be of no use.

Was the husband Rueben? There is a child registered Glebe 1867 & 1869. also the death of a child 1872. One of the addresses on same may help.

I wasn't sure you were interested in the later years, so I have rechecked.

In 1891 Mrs Mary A is at the same address
In 1891 Christopher's name is spelt Penington

In 1892, Mary Ann is still in Forsyth St and Christopher's name is back to the original spelling 

Checking the alternate spelling
1879 finds Mrs Mary A Penington on the index, but in the book
Mrs Mary A Peninton dealer, Glebe St Glebe

In 1870 Reuben Penington - Glebe St Glebe

thank you trish is the number you quoted 44 Forsyth its not 54 Forsyth
just curious as the family lived later at 54.

It was definitely 44 - I did notice in 1920s (I think) some of the family at 54. Some libraries etc have the Sands on microfiche & they are indexed by address as well as name, so it could be useful to check if both numbers exist, but perhaps the children simply moved to another address in the street. Do you know when Mary A died?

Yes 1908     Reuben died in glebe st .What do you think a dealer is?

That was quite a while before 1920s, so maybe everything got renumbered ??

Dealer - I tend to think of a wheeler and dealer, or 2nd hand dealer - anyone that sold bits and pieces. It was perhaps something her husband did & she took it over? but I am only guessing.

Do you have her death certificate - it may mention an occupation (perhaps unlikely for a woman in 1908) and it may have the address of whatever child was the informant - if you want more detail of where they lived.

By the war time, one Henry Reuben Peninton gives his sister, Mrs Mary A. Walker, as next of kin and she is livingat 58 Talford St , Glebe.
