Father Berrys Home Liverpool

Has anybody heard of a Father Berrys home for children in Liverpool, and if so does there exist any information regarding children addmitted ?

Welcome to Rootschat.

I'm sure someone locak could help you more, but this is a link to a reply on another mailing list which refers to the home.

A group of children from the home are emigrating to Canada under the Home Children Scheme.  The Catholic Emigration Assi=ociation are mentioned.  This was early 19C, but I can't see either mentioned by 1965 in a National Catholic Directory.

I hope you find more.  Keep asking.  Rootschatters will allways try to help or point you to someone who can.

I put "Father Berry's Home" into the search facility on the National Archives site and the these were the two main results.  Both are to parts of the catalogue at Merseyside Record Office, so it sounds as if they are the people to approach.  It might be worth an email to them.

Fr Berry's (Arthur Chilton Thomas) Homes, their magazines, Bazaars, emigrations etc , are mentioned.  Not sure about admissions but minutes books etc.  I would send Merseyside record Office an Email or even ring them up initially, I think.

The address of the workhouse was 144a Brownlow Hill

In the 30s/40s the workhouse was owned by a Roman Catholic group.

In the 1940 Gore's directory there was in Brownlow Hill -
144 Brown B., dairy
146 The Catholic Benefit & Thrift Society, C.E.Lynch, secretary
150 Father Berry's Home for Friendless Catholic Children, Rev. E. Bennett, administrator
150 Liverpool Catholic Children's Society
150 Our Ladies Home for Homeless Babies
150 St Vincent de Paul's Catholic Home for Working Boys
150 Liverpool Catholic Children's Protection Society

My mum says it was on Shaw Street. She seems to think it was a home for teenage boys who were taught a trade.

Does Father Berrys Home have any connection with the Newsboys Home for Destitute Friendless Boys that was on 122-126 Everton Road? I'm trying to find a relative THOMA GEORGE DAVIES b. 1902 who was there from about 1905 when he was orphaned until about 1913.

I cant find the Newsboys in the 1911 census.

Any help welcomed.
