Hi

An Elizabeth Ann Firth was buried in the unconsecrated section of Armley Cemetery Leeds on 26/7/1915. Her age at the time of death is shown as 79.

No record of the husband though.

Hi Doug

That must be her...in 1901 they lived in Armley, but I wonder why she was buried in unconsecrated ground, they were fairly well off people. This was my Great Grandmothers sister.

I wonder where Francis George Firth is, he died Sept 1903 and was also living in Armley in 1901

Does anyone know if graves in unconsecrated ground had headstones.

Thanks again Doug..I had given up hope! ;D ;D

It had nothing to do with money, more to do with their religious convictions.
When most Cemeteries were designed and opened, certain parts were formally blessed by dignitaries of the Church of England, thereby consecrating the ground prior to burial.
However, it was also recognised that persons from other religious denominations such as Roman Catholics, Methodist etc. would also wish to be buried in the Cemeteries, therefore some areas were left unconsecrated by the Church of England.

When a burial takes place in an unconsecrated part of the Cemetery, the minister representing the religious belief of the deceased will conduct a service at the graveside, thereby blessing that individual grave at the time of burial.

If the family wished to erect a gravestone then they could.

Thanks for the info Tuppie, I looked on the internet to find where Armley cemetery is and discovered that it is about half a mile from where my brother lives..I live in Spain but I have emailed and asked if he will go the the cemetery to see if he can find any headstone.

Wish I could do it myself!!

Thanks again
