21 miles across the sea to Scotland
« on: Thursday 29 May 08 05:03 BST (UK) »
The Ballyhackamore Village Trust site mentions traders going to the market in Portpatrick rather than making difficult journeys to reach markets in Ireland. http://www.btinternet.com/~phyllis.martin1/history1.htm

The Portpatrick Parish Register from 1759 to 1826 may be worth a look if you can't trace the marriage of your Co. Down ancestors as Portpatrick was known as the "Gretna Green for Ireland".

The Portpatrick website has some great nineteenth century pictures of the village harbour http://www.portpatrick.co.uk/index.html

"The Wigtownshire Pages" contain an article, by Crawford MacKeand, titled "Ower the Sheuch" which has some interesting details relating to travel between Scotland and Ireland. The journey between Donaghadee and Portpatrick took only two hours in the
days of sail. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~leighann/county/travel.html

I've got the views both ways,  Christopher  :)

I found it fascinating to see Ireland and the Isle of Man from SW Scotland and then from Kintyre and then flying over on a clear day  and seeing how close they were and seeing Scotland from your side, especially from the North Antrim coast  :)

It makes one realise how important the Celtic Sea was to our Ancestors' movements.
