If Samuel was actually born in Reading, this might be the one.

A free search on Findmypast for parchment makers named Taylor brings up two Johns in Henley (not too far from Reading) aged 57 and 18.
in 1861 that is..

I can't find them on Ancestry - but they must be there!

Samuel's death certificate said that he died at the age of 44 which confirms what we had always been told.
He died in January 1886 in Havant Hampshire.
Which would suggest that he was born in 1842.

Sheila

If there is anyone who would like the two certificates I have obtained, if it ties up with their families I am happy to send them to them.

One is Samuel born 1844 with the mother Martha Jones Father John Taylor Shoe maker .

The other is Samuel 1842 Mother Charlotte formally Young father Charles Labourer.

the birth certs you have are the submitted entries i mentioned on IGI earlier

re the death, the age at death was what the informant believed the deceased to be and not necessarily how old they actually were
so they can often be out.

Hi

if he [Samuel] came from Steyning and She [Ann] from Berks it would have made sense to marry at her home parish i.e. St Lawrence Berks
i noted from that census the child was born Bristol, another piece to the puzzle ??

i expect they are listed as Tayler as thats how we speak round here!
Steyning is just down the road from me.
