On one of my ancestors birth cert. it states he was born on the 30th. june in 1812 at the Orchard.Does anyone have a clue as to what the Orchard might have been,e.g. a hospital,a house, a pub etc.or was it really a fruit orchard.

Hi, If you are talking about the parish of Johnstone,Dumfries, then Orchard is the name of a house in the parish. It is on the side of the main Glasgow- Carlisle road the M74.  It is about 3 miles north of Johnstonebridge village.  As far as I know it was never a commercial orchard.
hope this helps

Thank you for your replies, both of which are helpful.
I have just found another possible in the history of the burgh of dumfries,it mentions a place called "adam andersons orchard neuk at kingholm on the upper sands."
As my ancestor was an anderson and was born in "the orchard",and was baptised adam....... makes me wonder.
The place mentioned was a meeting place for weavers etc.
Adam's father was a weaver in his families small cottage buisness in old cumnock, from where he would perhaps take his goods for sale.
