My Kirkcudbright lot did it all the time - the only time I found their correct ages were via bpts and deaths  ::)

They all lived to ripe old ages if they survived childhood  8)

Trish - we are of a similar age, so let me know how old it is  ;D

This should be good  ;D

My Irish great great grandmother took up with her, younger, brother-in -law after my gggrandfather died. She lost 10 years between census returns and never put them back!

Ruby

The Irish don't count Ruby - my Irish gg grandfather not only changed his age at every opportunity, he also changed where he was born  :o  Gadget - I started counting backwards, years ago  :D

Meanwhile

Has anyone looked at the possibility that Mary was illegitimate and simply made up one or both of her parent names?  or is the birth found by Sancti 1796 the best option?

Hi Trish

Unless you've gone to bed  :-\

James Bradbrook seems to be the last child - aged 13 in 1861 so b. circa 1848. At the latest, she would be 50 ish then, which would suggest the earliest birthdate would be around 1798 - outside chance of 1796 and aged 52 when she had James but ......

Thanks, I obviously wasn't paying attention, my first option may thus be a possibility - for those times 52 is very doubtful, as it still is today for a natural conception.
