Providential Place, Peterborough
« on: Wednesday 11 June 08 19:21 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I have just discovered my 4xgt grandfather, and in 1861, he was working as a railway fireman and lodging in #7 Providential Place, Peterborugh. I cannot find any reference to this to this on any map though and just wondering if any 'locals' can fill me in?

Thanks.

:)

All of this old street pattern in central Peterborough has been swept away, and much of it is now occupied by the Queensgate shopping centre.

I can't locate Providential Place exactly, but I think it must have been somewhere in the area I've marked with an arrow on  this map http://www.rootschat.com/links/03mo/

Sorry I can't be more precise than this.

Ah right, Thanks JenB. I am not familiar with Peterborough at all so did not know if i was simply being a bit stupid and overlooking it somehow.

Seems very close to the station (if that was it's location in 1860?) - seems a perfect place for a railway fireman to live?!?!

Thanks for your help.

If you have a look at Peterborough on the old maps site you will get an idea of what this area used to look like.  http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
The railway station has always been in that location I think.

Hi,

Providential Place could have also been along Lincoln Road, (follow the line of Bourges Boulevard on JenB's reply), I have 3 ancestors who lived in Places along here, unfortunately only 1 remains.

I don't suppose you know what Parish Providential Place was in? Or what Street or Road was before or after Providential Street on the census.

You could email the museum, museum@peterborough.gov.uk they are a mind of information, and do have some experts in old Street Names.

Just found this;
Parish. Clerks.
St. John the Baptist, James Wright (sexton), Providential place, Nelson street.
on this website;
http://www.cromwellcollection.org.uk/cgi-bin/cambscoll/history.pl?term=Peterborough&category=village&exact=exact

The only other reference I can find to Nelson Street is on this website;
http://www.peterboroughheritage.org.uk/library/pcchdkitchlocs.asp

All the surrounding streets are in one area so I can only assume Nelson Street is in that area. Knowing the area it would make sense as there are lots of railway worker cottages and houses. If you use the map JenB used, 1 click left and 3 clicks north will take you to the area.

Hi Andrea,

I checked out the enumeration district descriptions.

Providential Place was in Peterborough enumeration district 13. If I read it correctly the description of the District suggests that Westgate was on its northern side, and Queen Street on its western side so that must place Providential Place somewhere in the area I originally indicated I think.  District 13 certainly contained the Almshouses which were on the southern side of Westgate.

I think the area you suggest (in the area of The Triangle?) was in Enumeration district 19.

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for your replies.

For the record, the parish is Peterborough St John The Baptist. The road listed before is Workhouse Close Rd and interestingly, the property after on the 1861 census is;

What does the bit after the Royal Hotel say?

Thanks for the email address for the museum - will drop them a line.

Thanks again.
