more news on the george and dragon in today! the licensing register reveals that the george and dragon was granted a license in  1758  at ardwick green, the present or recent building in which i lived is mid to late victorian, as i said the cellar looked much older than the pub.  built maybe around  1860 give or take 10 years would be my estimate for the pub i lived in, so we have an earlier george and dragon inn on the same site maybe a hundred years earlier.    my research is begining to reveal the original pub as a house that applied for a license and converted the front rooms to sell beer , then nearly a hundred years later the present or recent pub replaced it around 1850-60. the interesting thing is it kept the name all those years, i hope to have drawings and a map this week .

HI again Tweek
That's fascinating news. Where did you find this information ? I have been searching the internet with no luck !

Is there any possible way of finding out when my Thomas Sedgwick took over the pub ? He shows on the 1881 census & 1891 census but I don't know when he actually became the publican & when he stopped.
Any help is greatfully appreciated !
Thanks
Cathy

Hi, you could email  archiveslocalstudies@manchester.gov.uk  and  lancashire  record office. They have all the licensing records  between them, try archives first as they were helpful and quick  only two days.

until i get the  exact date of the  victorian  g @d  you wont know which one your ancester ran, if it was late victorian build he could have  been landlord of the original one or maybe both!

Do they charge for this search ? & if so - how much?

this just in! the old george and dragon was a low white washed hostel standing well back from the road and built in 1758 it stood for 113 years before being demolished in 1871. It seems to have had a bad reputation as there were objections to the new one being built by the gentry who were outraged by the behaviour of the lower classes on the green, on which there were shelter houses for the poor. children from the streets ran about in hordes shouting ,screaming, unwashed, a particular problem was dirty unwashed men sitting on benches in the green all day sunday smoking foul smelling tobbaco and blowing it at people leaving church. The present george and dragon must have been built soon after 1871 must have taken a while to build in those days a building that size.

Is this information from archiveslocalstudies@manchester.gov.uk ? Thomas Sedgwick shows on the 1881 census as being the publican - he may have been the first one to do this in the "new" pub !
Thanks again for your information. I am slowly building a story out of the information rather than just having dates
