Emma: Thanks for the 1861 info. This would mean Richard possibly got married in England rather than Ireland.

Hi Emma, some of the Sloan's found in the 1891 census for Cleator I think may be mine. - Daniel, 20yrs (border), John 19yrs, Edward 13yrs. They were at Trumpet Rd in 1881 census. Have you any more information on them? Cass

Hampshire - Alford
Ireland - County Down - Fagan, Murphy

I have one reference to a John Sloan -  not a lot of details.
 He married Mary Braniff (b1948 so I assume John was born around the same time) in Cleator on 21/4/1884.

Mary was one of 10 children and the 2 eldest had moved to the US. When teh father died they brough the rest of the famil out to Iowa - I think John adn Mary went too but not sure.
