Where was Grove Rd, Islington-COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 19 June 08 11:21 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather Edward E Hill was born at 22, Grove Road,  Islington East in 1878.

I have searched old maps but cannot find where Grove Rd. is.  I would like to find where it is so that I can search the 1881 Census for him, thats if the family are still living there.

you dont need to know where it is - theres an address index feature in the 1881 search engine (unlike the other years in the Ancestry implementation)

 :)

Added: having said that theres no actual Grove Road I can see in Islington East or West .... only one in Tottenham   :-[

 - there was a pub on this street, the 1881 census details are given so you can find them and then look for neighboring Hills (on the free site, instead of on A*. :D).  At No 22. Grove Road in 1881 are several households:

1) William Richards, wife Sarah, daughters Bertha and Edith A, and a visitor, Rebecca Melton.
2) George and wife Ellen Brown
3) James and Elizabeth Walker, several children, mother in law Sarah Williamson

Edward E. Hill might be with father Edward and mother Annie at Prince Edward Street?

A good exercise !  Just shows that sub-regn districts are useful keywords ..... and Rd vs Road vs R too.

PS. The 1881 on Ancestry is free !  ;)

Thanks for all the information, I have searched Enumeration District with Grove Rd in but found nothing. It was in the Holloway area.

I will now search Elmore St in the 1881 Census just in case they have been indexed wrong as they appear to be living there later on.

Edward Ernest Hill father was William E Hill a furrier, mother Frances Hill. I believe they are living at 40 Elmore St, Islington on the 1891 Census, but his age is 26 it should be 46.  I believe this to be correct as Edward was born at Holloway on the Census.
Frances died in 1897 at 39 Elmore St. His married daughter is living at 12, Elmore St on the 1901 Census.

There are many William Hill's living in Islington, his middle name varies from Edmund, Edward and Edwin.

I cant find them in 1881 - the only Wm Hill who was a Furrier, born c1844 in Islington - is married to an Abigail, and they dont have an Edward / Ernest  ::)

I have this information, the more I collect the more I get confused.

The William Hill whose wife is Abigail is a problem. On the 1891 Census she is visiting her daughter in Tottenham whose husband is also a Furrier. I cannot find her on the 1901 Census.

On the 1901 Census there is a William Hill visiting a Caroline Langdell a widow, he has with him a daughter Eliza, I have her birth cert it states that the mother is Caroline Hill nee Prior I cannot find a marriage for them.

William Hill's wife Frances maiden name was Atkinson on the 1881 Census in Shoreditch there is a William Atkinson furrier with wife Frances and son Edward aged 2 born Holloway, the same as the 1891 Hill Census.

I cannot find a wedding for this couple, or William and Frances. I wonder if my William had two families on the go?
