Flagger & Slater
« on: Saturday 22 January 05 02:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can someone tell me please if there is some sort of list for the trade of Flagger & Slater.

My Fletcher's were of this profession for at least 3 generations. I have the birth cert of Violet Fletcher 1908 Blackpool, which states her Dad Frederick William Fletcher as a flagger & slater (master)

Seeing the word 'master' makes me think there may have been a register - union - job description - appretenticeships, something.

I have put flagger & slater into a general web search but didn't really find anthing of much interest.

Cheers          Caryn

For anyone wanting to know what old trades and occupations are www.rmhh.co.uk has a list.

(There is an entry for "Flagger and Tiler" which is to do with laying roofing tiles and sounds like the same sort of thing.)

Doesn't give any info on unions or registers though.
Byers (Salford & London)
Stringfellow (Salford & Chorley)
Holmes (Manchester & Birmingham)
Goulding/Golden (Birmingham & Lincolnshire)
Bassett (Manchester & Salford, Staffordshire)
Child (Lincolnshire)
Belshaw (Salford)
Hallsworth (Eccles & Salford)
Vernon (Bury & Chapel en le Frith)

Sunnie,Flags is, or was a posh term for paving stones, slate was also used for the same purpose, mainly indoors, both for its longevity and decorative possibilities.
Being a Master, possibly having apprentices, there may be a Guild record.

Hi Goggy,

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought of my flagger & slater ancestors working indoors, to me it was more of a paving & roofing thing. Thank you for the further insight into the trade.
