Don't know how to progress
« on: Sunday 22 June 08 19:12 BST (UK) »
Quite early in my research I found out that one of my gt gt grandfathers (David Price - yeah, I know, there are thousands of them!) came from Wales but I wasn't able to get any further because the census information was so confusing. It seems that he was born in Llanelly but I think there are several within Wales. I found his Christening in the IGI, which showed Llanelly, Brecon. With the help of Rootschatters I found that in 1841 he lived in Garnddyris, Blaenavon, Llanwenarth, Monmouthshire. I can't find him in 1851 and by 1861 he had moved to Middlesbrough.
I have been thinking of joining a Welsh FHS but don't know which one - any advice? I really don't know how to progress now because I haven't the opportunity to visit South Wales.  I would love to find his parents' marriage details and their births. I feel a bit 'stranded' with this one. Any ideas folks?

What are the details of his christening from the IGI? A******y has a transcription of Breconshire marriages 1813-1837. So, if you can get the date from there, you can then get a copy of the parish record from the archives.

If he's in Monmouthshire, there are online transcriptions of parish records

Christening 08 FEB 1829   Llanelly, Brecon, Wales
Parents Roger and Frances Price. It's an extracted record so presumably quite reliable. No idea when his parents married though. The eldest sibling was born about 1821 so that may be an indicator. Thanks for the links Osprey, I'll give them a try

Roger Price to Francis Prickhard 16/8/1818 at Crickhowell  by banns - not on IGI. Suspect the surname is meant to be Pritchard or variant.

Thank you so much Osprey, that's brilliant! I didn't have any census info on Roger other than the 1841 so that's marvellous. They will be the correct entries, Roger was shown on David's marriage certificate as a shoemaker so that ties up. I'm rubbish at geography and particularly about Wales, I get so confused about where to look. Well that's my excuse anyway! Thanks again Osprey.

this usually works, when things are behaving themselves -
click on all databases on the first page in the 'more collections' bit which takes you into the card catalogue
search on Breconshire in the 'database title' box, & you get Breconshire marriages.
Think they have Radnorshire as well, and possibly other goodies hidden away in the depths of the card catalogue.

Hope you find some useful entries!
