SMITH family- census lookup please
« on: Friday 27 June 08 08:47 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to trace Henry William SMITH of Wiltshire.

He emigrated to Australia aboard the 'Shackamaxon' in 1859 - Australian shipping records state he was from Wiltshire.

HIs marriage records in Australia indicate his year of birth to be 1838, and his age at death confirm this year. Each record states he is from Wiltshire England, one state specifically Salisbury.  I have no parents details and would really like to track him down!!

I know Henry William Smith must be a ridiculously common name, but is there any chance of him appearing with his family on the 1841 or 1851 census??  I do not know how else to track him down -

I have found births for Henry William SMiths in Amesbury in 1837, Alderbury in 1838 and Salisbury in 1840, but have no way of know which one is the right lad!  He names his children Edward and William, Emily and Laura - perhaps these were family names.

Any help / suggestions would be much appreciated - I just don't know where else to look with no parents on his shipping or BMD records in Australia.....

KYlie B

Hi Kylie B

What was Henry's occupation, might give a clue?  As you suspected, there are several possibilities in the census

Here are a couple:

1841 HO107/1165/2 Folio 19  Page 3
County,  Amesbury, Wiltshire
Stephen Smith    25 Carpenter J.
Hannah 30, Ann 6, Jane 4, Harriet 2 , Henry 1 Mo
all born Wiltshire

1841 HO107/1165/7 Folio 8  Page 11
Durrington, Amesbury, Wiltshire
William Smith    32 Ag. Lab
Ann 30, George 14, Mark 12, Dianah 10, Eliza 8, Mary 6, Henry 4
all born Wiltshire

Kind regards,
Barbara

Thanks Barbara,

I really have no idea where to go here....

His occupation according to his marriages and death in Australia was Porter, and then security at Gasworks - which doesn't give a leaning to any family tradition sadly.

Hmmmm- will have to ponder further on this one.
Do you know if there were departure shipping records held in the UK that might give different details than the Australian arrivals for 1858-60?? This seems to be my only chance of getting some parentage for poor Henry William!!

Many thanks again
Kylie B

Hi Kylie B

I don't know about shipping records, sorry.  I could look in passport applications but they only give name and date of application so wouldn't help.

Another thing is to see if someone here has access to Wiltshire baptisms and find a Henry William instead of the Henrys I found in the census.

What I will do is try to follow through the census the two Henrys I gave earlier  to see if they go missing by 1861

The IGI has a baptism for Henry Albert Smith 1841 Amesbury, parents Stephen & Hanna, so that eliminates that one

The family with William and Ann I can find in 1851 but Henry is missing, haven't found him yet.

No suitable baptisms on IGI for a Henry William

Barbara,
Now this is getting more and more confusing....

I have bitten the bullet and bought birth certificates for all Henry William's children in Australia and they state he was from :

Salisbury England on several, and .....Salisbury, Middlesex -???

And a small gold mine found - more info just arrived from State records with an additional index from the shipping arrivals -

Henry William was born in Salisbury Middlesex (??), and place of residence before emigrating in 1858 was Middlesex. Parents were William and Elizabeth - living in London at time of emigration.

So now where to?!

Any further advice would be much appreciated - do I abandon WIltshire and head to London to find this family in the 1850's and 60's and try to trace them back to Wiltshire?

Heres another possible lead, 1841 Census.

      WILLIAM  SMITH 28 Ag Lab
      ELIZABETH SMITH  23
      WILLIAM  3
      MARY  1

   Targetes, Wokingham, Wiltshire.

   H0 107 piece 1165, folio 17/5, page 4.

Wokingham is right on the Middlesex border.
I found an early marriage there in my own tree due to work on the early railway line.

Thank you - Henry William's occupation on the shipping index was Farm labourer, so this census seems possible with the father working as an Ag Lab.

Is there any sign of this family in 1851?
Does the 1841 census tell you where people were born?

Many thanks!

This family were all born in Wiltshire on 1841 census.

Unfortunately I do not have access to the 1851 so can can someone kindly have a look for them, thanks.
