There is a big thread about the Parkhurst Boys

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,80510.0.html

It's mainly concerned about those who were sent to New Zealand but Tony has some Australian information.

"There were 1,499 juvenile convicts transported direct from Parkhurst Prison to Australia/NZ over the period 1838-1864, but this figure ignores those transferred from Parkhurst to other Prisons, Pentonville, Millbank and Dartmoor for instance, and then subsequently transported.   Most of these eventually disembarked in Western Australia, with a small proportion arriving in VDL and Port Phillip.

Including the 23 Biographies documented for NZ my database extends to some 350 Biographies, with very much  emphasis on Western Australia where the "convict stain", though not exactly disregarded, did not deny the keeping and researching of family records that may have been more obvious in the Eastern States until quite recently."

Hello Bearkat and Liverpool Annie,

Good News......Dissertation has just received an extension of one year for completion with a change of Supervisors midstream.

The Disseratation has developed extremely well, especially as I have managed to write over a 1,000 Biographies, of which 750 are for the approximate 2,000 boys who were sent to Australia and NZ.   Sadly, NZ has proved impossible to research and has not progressed at all for the past two years.   Most records show there were 1,499 Parkhurst Boys, but the real figure is closer 2,000 when you include those who were discharged from Parkhurst to other English prisons and then transported.

For the moment

Tony

It will be a fantastic piece of research & great resource.

How frustrating that your research in New Zealand has not been very fruitful.
