Elizabeth GALE, b 1825, Somerset
« on: Monday 07 July 08 22:16 BST (UK) »
The information I have is that this lady was born I believe in Ditcheat, Somerset.  She married Jacob Stricklings.  Their children were Mary 1844, John 1846, James 1848, Thomas 1854 and Sarah 1872.  Elizabeth's father was called Thomas born 1805. I would love to know more about Thomas's ancestors and Elizabeth's mother.

On the 1851 to 1881 censuses Elizabeth gives her birthplace as Barton St David.
The only other Gale giving Barton St David as their birthplace is Edmund/Edwin.

1851 census HO107 1926 folio 118
Barton St David
William Gregory Head 45 Married Stone quarryman Barton St David
Charlotte Gregory Wife 64 Married Barton St David
Edwin Gale Stepson 22 Unmarried Agricultural Labourer Barton St David

The marriage registration GRO reference is
Dec 1842 Langport 10  591
GALE    Elizabeth     STRICKLING    Jacob

but 1851 census surname given as STICKLAND
and it is Jacob who gives his birthplace as Ditcheat
1881 census gives Jacob's as Lottisham

There are a couple of possibles for Elizabeth in 1841 census, but none living with family so unable to say which is correct.

Pilton, Somersetshire     (Pilton abt 5 miles from Barton St. David I think)
HO107 piece 963 folio 9/10 page 11
in household of Joseph Stevens, farmer
Elizabeth Gale 15 female servant

Chamberlain Street, St Cuthbert (In), Wells
HO107 piece 962 folio 8/10 page 12
in household of John Sandell, Hay Maker
Elizabeth Gale 20 Female Servant

Hopefully someone will be able to do a parish look-up for her baptism.

Hello, I am Elizabeth Gale and Jacobs Sticklands Great, Great Grandaughter.

You may have a problem with the Stickland side of things as they were known as Sticklings/Stricklings/Stickland - and when my Granfather died he died as a Strickland!

Is there anything in particular you are after?

Best regards
Michele

Thank you Barbara,

I have most bmd certificates for this family.

Jacob  and Elizabeth were my Great Great Great Grandparents
Thomas and Amelia my Great Great Grandparents
Ethel my Great Grandmother
Cyril was my Grandfather

That is my immediate line.  I'd be happy to fill anyone in - there's a few stories!
