COMPLETED - Philip Charles Badier-Photographer in Sydney
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 04:13 BST (UK) »

Philip Badier was a photographer in Newtown, 1800s. His photographs are now popping up on the net.

I believe the 1st photo here is of his sister, Marie. The child also looks like a family member.

There is also one at the Power House Museum in Sydney.

Philip was the brother of my paternal Great Grandmother Marie Badier. He came to Australia, from New Zealand and was born in Jersey. It appears that his mother married a sailor, in Dunedin, in 1874.

I have details of him once here, but I would love to know when and how he - and his sister's Ada and Marie - arrived in Sydney from NZ. This is my only missing link on the Badier family.

Hi Jamjar

Looks like he was still here in 1880...

..unless there was more than one photographer with the name Badier....

Well my goodness. Yes, that will be my Philip.

More interesting though, is the abduction and marriage of Mary Ann, at 15. She was married in Australia twice!

Thank you very much for the information.

...so is the Mary Ann in the newspaper article his sister Marie?

From your other post you say that Philip is aged 10 in 1874, so is it likely that he would be in a business partnership in 1880 aged 16?

Yes, it's his sister.

I have come to believe that anything is possible with family history.

Have just checked the Jersey census. He was 8 in 1871, so he'd be 17.

He's supposed to be a year younger than his sister.

One never knows about ages. His mother lied about her age when going to New Zealand from Jersey. She made herself younger, of course. I bet Mr Belet didn't know that!

Very good question Bren.   :)   ;)     (Was about to query same).

Jamjar ... at the PapersPast link Bren provided ... and you may want to read through a few of the "hits" labelled as advertisements ...  the "Tuapeka Times" - 24 May 1882, carries an advert headed "Land Transfer Act Notice".   There is reference there to a "P.C. BADIER" .   (May be 'evidence' that he was still resident in NZ around that time) ???

Hi

Page 3 - Advertisements - column 1
"Tuapeka Times"  -  20 May 1882
(also same advert published on 24 May 1882)

I just used "exact phrase" search on "Badier" (for a total of 26 "hits") .

(Strange  ... it doesn't come up if you enter search as "P.C. Badier"  .... not sure why that is  ???     Sometimes we need to be "creative" when using the search engine at PapersPast   ;) ).
