Hartlepool Census 1871 - Robinson
« on: Sunday 23 January 05 18:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm new to this board.
Can anyone help me with a Thomas Robinson who was born between 1869 and 1871 in Hartlepool or West Hartlepool. His father was Thomas Robinson according to his marriage certificate.

I can't find a definite link in the 1881 Census but have found him in the 1901 Census. However his age given doesn't match the age from his marriage certificate. Hence the uncertaintly over his birth year.

thanks,
Barry

HI
I can only find one Thomas Robinson in the 1871 with a father Thomas,.
but his age is 5. Do you know from his marriage certificate what his father's occupation was? This one is a farmer.

Let me know and I can look again for you.

Hi Nicky,

thanks very much for you help.

Thomas junior was married in 1896 aged 25. His father was a farm labourer (a bit of a fall from grace if it was him, but I suppose these things happen).
Thomas junior in 1901 was listed as 32. I'm certain this was my relative as my grandad is with him.

Hi
not certain as to this one, can you post the details from the 1901 census for all the house, and maybe something will help.

having looked at your 1901 census, there is a son age 9? Was Thomas a widower when he married Caroline?

If that is the case then I would presume in 1891 we would be looking for a married Thomas.

If he wasnt then was George the son of Caroline?

This really is a tough one to sort!! But will keep looking.

Hi Nicky,

I should have added that George was the illegitimate son of Caroline (nee Abbott. I have his birth certificate) but family talk is that Thomas was the father. But they would say that in those times I suppose.

(In fact George never officially changed his name to Robinson although he called himself that all his life. Even when he got married to my grandmother. There was a right todo when he died. But it was all sorted.)

Well Barry looking at this there is really only one possiblility, that fits, with everything I have looked at, in 1891 Caroline Abbott is with her sister and her husband in Stranton, in 1891 there is a Thomas Robinson, age 22 farm servant. From this I would presume that this is the Thomas Robinson from the 1881 census, only his father was a farmer not a farm labourer, but then looking at his age maybe he handed the farm over and became a labourer.

Not too sure how you could check all this out really.

1881 census

Thomas Robinson, head, age 50, farmer 30acres, born Yorks Gillow
Rebecca, wife, age 40 born Yorks Horsemothersly???(not very clear)
Thomas, son, age 13, scholar born West Hartlepool
John, son, age 17, farmer, born East Hartlepool
Elizabeth, daughter, age 12, scholar born West hartlepool
Rebecca, daughter, age 10, scholar born West Hartlepool
Mary E, daughter, age 7, scholar, West Hartlepool
Sarah Jane, daughter, age 7 months, born West Hartlepool
Henrietta Clarkson,servant,age17, servant, born West Hartlepool

RG11/4908
ed 24 folio 111 page 16

Sorry this doesnt really give you anything 100% but maybe something to work on.
