Help needed please!
« on: Saturday 12 July 08 11:47 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone,
I am trying to find the correct births for my 3xgtgrandparents. I believe they were both born in Perthshire.
This is what I know so far:-

Daniel ROBERTSON married Catherine McKISAIK at Comrie 3rd May 1788

They moved to Fife after they were married and their 6 children were born in Newburgh, Markinch and Monimail

I have 2 possible births for Catherine, both Comrie:-
26/8/1762 to John McKISAIK and Christian McBEATH
21/5/1759 to Patrick McKISAICK and Catherine DRUMMOND

For Daniel, I have come up with 3 possible:-
Perth  21/12/1760 to Charles ROBERTSON and Sarah MACDONALD
Dundee, Perth 21/3/1772 to Daniel ROBERTSON and Helen GALL
Fowlis Wester 27/2/1769 to Daniel ROBERTSON and Catherine SIM

There children's names :-
Peter,
Charlotte Rebecca Ruthven,
James,
Alexander,
Kathrine,
Mary Ann Melvil.

I am getting quite desperate now as I need to verify these relatives and have searched several sites to no avail.
Can anyone please give  me any more advice. It will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Sheilah

Hi Sheilah

I am correct in presuming that they both died before the 1841 census?

Hi again

I have had a quick look at the IGI to try and narrow down your options of Grandparents based on naming conventions.

Looking first for Daniel's parents at the couple who married in Fowlis Wester ( being the closest to Comrie) I found christenings for each of them in approximately the right time period, with fathers names being those used for the children later on ( if that makes sense).

DANIEL ROBERTSON b. 21 FEB 1748    c.23 FEB 1748   Perth, Perth, Scotland
Father:  ALEXR. ROBERTSON    Mother:  MARGARET MERNS

CATHARINE SIM c.26 JAN 1755   Fowlis Wester, Perth, Scotland
Father:  JAMES SIM

This is not an exact science! There may be better candidates if you look at the other couples but sometimes it can be the only way of narowing down your options. I know that by naming conventions you would ordinarily have expected to see the grandparents names, not the great grandparents names used, but as there is no Daniel I thought I would try a long shot. I could well be wrong.

Sorry this is a bit long and garbled. Low blood sugar, I'm away for lunch!

Hi Kirsty,

I sympathise with your blood sugar--I suffer with mine a lot as well!!

Thank you for your information. These were the couple I had as my favourites but I hadn't found the parents yet. As you say, they are the nearest to Comrie, but at that time there was a lot of trading across the glens and I thought Daniel could have come from anywhere!

I have no idea when either Daniel or Catherine died. The information I have is from their son's DC. Daniel was a gardner. I was thinking that with the names he gave the daughters, there must be a connection to Lord Ruthven--maybe Daniel was the gardner at Melville House, but I can't find any archive material on it.

There is a Daniel Robertson on the 1841 census in Colinsburgh, aged 70, an Ag. Lab.

And also on the1851, still Colinsburgh, aged 84, a forester. He lives with his grandaughter, Jane Rue and 2 children. I have traced Jane as Jane RAE, born Newbattle --mother Christian ROBERTSON. AS I haven't found that Daniel had a daughter Christian, I cannot verify that he is 'my' Daniel.

The only death, is Colinsburgh in 1852, no details, so no joy there.

Nothing at all on Catherine.

I'll dig around on this couple and see what i come up with. As you say, the naming patterns are never accurate, but I have found people from them in the past!

For this reason, I was inclined to pick Patrick McKISAICK and Catherine DRUMMOND as Catherine's parents.....

Thanks again,

Sheilah  xx
