Hello,
I am just wondering, have I posted this in the wrong area? Is Hebburn in Northumberland or Durham?

Hello,
I am still confused, when I google Hebburn, I find both Hebburn Northumberland (Hebron) as in http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Hebburn/    near Morpeth, and Hebburn, a town within Tyne and Wear, and I am still not sure if Tyne and Wear is in Northumberland or Durham.
I believe my Hebburn is the second one as it shows up when I looked for St. Rollox St. Hebburn on the maps.
It seems to be part of Newcastle? Perhaps someone can explain this area?
Thanks,
Sally

Hello,
Still confused as to the area, but I managed to find the Hebburn Cemetery located at Victoria Rd W. NE31 1UR. Is it in Durham or NBLD?

Cannot give you an "A" for north-east Geography LOL.

Hebburn on Tyne ( on the south bank of the river) was in the "traditional" County Durham, never in Northumberland.

In 1970 bureaucrats decided to take the south-eastern part of Northumberland and the north-eastern part of County Durham, merge them, to form the new county of Tyne & Wear. (Similar changes happened throughout England Scotland and Wales)

Then in 1986 Tyne and Wear as a "normal" county was disbanded leaving what we have today.. i.e. Five separate
" Unitary Authorities" of North Tyneside, Newcastle, on the north side of River Tyne, and South Tynseide, Gateshead and Sunderland , south of the Tyne.

For some functions the separate units work independently of each other, for others they work jointly.

Hebburn today lies within the unitary authority of South Tyneside.
(which is neither Northumberland or County Durham)

"Ancient" Parishes were the forerunners of local authorities. Before 1875, Hebburn on Tyne lay within the parish of Jarrow. In 1875 Hebburn became an independent parish.

Hi Mike,
You're right - it's all very confusing to us further south - and the genuki search didn't really help! Michael's "geography lesson" is much easier to understand ;D
I found these sites which should help Sallylynne understand it all:
http://www.locallife.co.uk/southtyneside/cemeteries3.asp

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Tyneside

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/south%20shields.html

http://www.hebburn.org/
The fourth site is just a lovely site which lots of useful information on Hebburn. The others hopefully explain how Hebburn used to come under Durham registration district, but now South Tyneside.
I searched rootschat to see where most of the posts regarding Hebburn cemetery were placed and most are on the Durham board, with the odd one under Northumberland - so you're not the only one to get confused ;)
I know you're worried that the post is on the wrong board, Sallylynne, but what will happen is one of the moderators will see it and move it if they think it needs doing - or you can contact one of them, and see if they will move it for you.
If you go on to the home page of rootschat and look at the foot of the page you will see the names of the users online at the moment. Any names in red are the moderators. Click on the name and their details will come up and you can PM them - I had to do this a couple of times when I was new to rootschat, and they're very helpful, and will come back to you.
Hope this all helps and doesn't add to the confusion.
Good luck,
 Paulene :)

Sallylynne,

And just adding a wee snippet to Paulene's notes, be prepared for disappointment once you target the right cemetery..... after many years of family searching, all my biggest failures have been in cemeteries.. e.g. found the spot but nothing there to mark it, found the headstone but unreadable through weather-wear.
But there are various transcriptions of burials/headstones available in libraries/county record offices. fingers crossed.

Hi Michael and Sallylynne,
There is hope on the distant horizon, though.
I've searched and searched in Staffordshire, and Worcestershire, for the burial place of my ancestor who died in 1859 (period when it could be church graveyard or general cemetery), but with no joy. And, it's difficult to know where, and how far, to search next.
BUT, a new site has just been launched, which if lots of councils join the scheme could make life much easier:
https://www.deceasedonline.com/servlet/GSDOSearch
Not many councils participating at the moment - but watch this space!
