Are there any Directories as early as 1700?
« on: Sunday 13 July 08 18:16 BST (UK) »
I don't suppose there are any Directories - or similar - going back as far as the 1700s?

I'm looking for John Carmalt - described at his daughter Katherine's marriage in 1743 as a saddler of Penrith.

I think I've found his baptism (1692) and marriage (1713) in Penrith but it would be nice to find out more about him.

historicaldirectories.org claims Pigot and Mannix run from 1750 but haven't digitised any that early. If you are local you could see if the local libraries have them.

Thanks, Bob.

yes, I'd noticed that as well. I got all of a doo-da when I thought I was going to be accessing directories from the 1700s but then fell back down to earth when I realised I wasn't!  ::) :'(

The first London directory appeared in 1677.
The first continental directory (Les Adresses de la Ville de Paris) appeared in 1691.
However the first directories were produced in the middle ages by nuns to help country girls find employment as domestic servants, and other similar offices for many kinds of goods and services.
The second for the wholesale trade and commercial operations in London.

From the above two directories in the late 17th century throughout the 18th century the numbers of directories grew until the development of postal services in the 19th century produced the third type the Post Office directory. Produced to help post office workers deliver the mail.
There quickly followed a multitude of different types of directories.

Incidentally Sir Walter Cope and Sir Arthur Gorges were granted a patent in 1611 for a Register for General Commerce.
Cheers

Jill,
I live in Australia, but my fathers family came from Egremont, and their surname is Shepherd.
It was just a wild hope that they were from the same family, obviously not.
Thanks for the reply
