Boer War - James Ernest Tomlinson
« on: Wednesday 16 July 08 11:59 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace James Ernest Tomlinson, born 1878 in Burton on Trent.  After the 1891 Census he has vanished without a trace and it has been suggested that he may have served in South Africa 1899 - 1902.  Does anyone know how I could go about looking for him?  Are there such things as casualty lists?

There are a few J Tomlinsons listed but no J E Tomlinson as a casualty:

You could visit Kew and look for his service papers in WO97 (WO= War Office). These are in alphabetical order so you do not need to know which regiment he served in. There is a link -  http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm

Not all papers survive, but there are no real alternatives.

Thanks for that information - it's very helpful.  I'll have to see if a trip can be arranged to Kew and see what I can find out.
