I am not well up on Coat of Arms, only that as far as know Knighted people have them. They are  then past down to the eldest male.Who the has a coat of arms made for his family, the same as his ancestor but with a slight addition. You also have to prove that you are that ancestors decedent,of course you can always have your own made but it would never be recorded ;) see this website

If you want to change the image you have for another you need to do this in your profile -

Click on "Rootschat profile Information" - the 2nd heading under Modify profile and make the appropriate changes.

If you want to display more than one image in your avatar (side image) that can only be done by merging multiple images into a single viewable image and then uploading this new image as above but selecting " I will upload my own picture"

Coats of Arms are awarded to an individual and are not ever ever for a surname or family.  They only pass from the recipient  to his elder son who on the death of the recipient has to apply to the College of Arms for them to be updated to his own.

It is not legal in the true sense of the word to use someone else's  Coats of arms.   You can check this out yoursel with the College of Arms and to the Lord Lyon for the Scottish Arms.

Can I just say that years ago we approached the College of Arms about our family crest - it turns out there was no entitlement to it despite it being used by the family for some 200 odd years   ::) but they were very helpful and found out quite a lot about the family's history for us which was a huge help in our tracing them.

I am getting very confused by the terminology being used in this thread.

A coat of arms except for royalty and bishops usually has the following main elements.

A shield which is what is inherited as described above.  It is the shield which most people have in their avatar not the crest or coat of arms although mine does show a coat of arms.
A helmet which shows the rank of the holder
A crest which sits on top of the helmet and follows different lines of inheritance and so is also useful in determining a family's history.
A motto for which there are no rules but it is often passed down a family.
Other items are pure decoration.

For royalty the helmet and crest are replaced by a crown or coronet which also shows rank.  The coat of arms may depending on the rank include supporters, often mythical animals holding up the shield.  These also are inherited.

For bishops the helmet and crest are replaced by a bishop's or archbishop's mitre.
