My great grandfather is a bit grubby
« on: Wednesday 23 July 08 21:16 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather, Clarence. Can anyone tell me what his medals were, please? On his gravestone it says that he was an MBE but I haven't been able to find any evidence of that.

Hi,

Whilst you are waiting for your restore.

The medal on the left (shaped like a cross) of the set of three looks like the MBE to me.  What was your G. Grandfathers full name?

Regards,
Mo

Hi Dave and Irene,

Thanks for the clean up. He looks somewhat smarter now!

Still hoping someone might be able to say for definite on the MBE question. I'd love to know when and why.

Cheers,

Jen

Hi,

Well, he took a bit of finding ;D

Go to www.gazettes-online.co.uk and choose the Edinburgh one.  Look down the right hand side for "Search the Archive" and then advanced search. Just put the date in and in the "exact phrase" box type Clarence Samuel Howe.

Issue is 13582 1st April, 1920  Capt. Clarence Samuel Howe, Master SS "City of London" Page 83.  If you go to page 1 of the supplement you will see it is the honours list and page 56 is the start of the MBE`s (I think).

Mo

Mo,

That is fantastic. Thank you so much for finding it. I honestly thought that whoever ordered Clarence's gravestone had either made a mistake or had delusions of grandeur.

I knew that he had been involved in a sea rescue, when he was a much younger man, which resulted in a citation from the King of Norway. Seems he was quite a man!

Thanks again.
