Repair, lighten and date for Irish Mary please
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 14:26 BST (UK) »
This photograph of Mary was probably taken in Ireland. She was born in 1915. I only realised what a lovely photo it is when I scanned it today and zoomed in on the face. Please could someone repair this photograph of a very special lady for me and perhaps give an approximate date. Mary moved to England during the late 1940s so it should be before then.

It is a very unusual type of photograph. It is very dark and seems to have a shiny covering over it which has bubbled and cracked. One small piece at the top came off when I was working with it today. It is mounted in a cardboard frame with scalloped edges. There are no identifying marks on the back, just bubbles and brown patches. There is another photograph of the same type along with other photographs which were found in a Ration Books Holder with Mary's name and address on it. I have scanned the photograph in its frame to show what it looks like.

Would appreciate some help please
Thank you
Angela

PS I have scanned this at 400 dpi. If a 600 dpi scan would be easier to work with as there is damage to the face please let me know so I can rescan.

Hi this is what I have got so far.  I don't know if a 600 dpi scan will be any better. This is very blocky and I cannot get much detail. Maybe someone more techy minded will know why. Is it something to do with compression?

Thank you Irene and Dave. I thought this might be a tricky one to work on. Sorry about the problems Irene. Can't help with/don't understand the technical problems but I have rescanned the photo with a crop of some of the  damaged background. Have scanned at 600dpi - don't know if this will make it any easier to work on!

Your time and help are appreciated.
Angela

There does seem to be a difference on the 600dpi scan. I can see a thumprint on the left of the photograph by Mary's shoulder which doesn't show up on the 400dpi scan. Don't think it's mine!

Thanks Dave that's a great improvement on the original. Did the 600dpi scan make it easier to repair? There was a lot of damage on this photo and the top layer is beginning to crumble. Have never seen this type of photograph before.

I should have mentioned that Mary had very dark brown hair and blue eyes, but as the damage was so bad I wasn't expecting colour as well. I really appreciate the time you and Irene must have spent on this photo. I'll make sure the next one I post is in better condition!
