and a Second Photograph
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 20:00 BST (UK) »
This is the other one I mentioned in the "May I post a Photograph" message.  I would be grateful for any advice you may have.

Thanks
Mary

1880s British Army....

Probably English, the Glengarry was in vogue in English Regts then...If you could do a high resolution scan of the collar dog that would be very useful!
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

I'm afraid I don't have the original, this copy was given to me on a CD by somebody who received it themselves.  I have a 1204 kb tif file which I made this jpeg from, but I don't suppose that would be any better.

I will make enquiries if there is any way we can get a message to the original owner.

Thanks
Mary

Line infantry, post-the 1881 Cardwell Reforms.

Whoever has the original should be able to read the shoulder title.

With the 1881 Reforms the collar & cuff colours were simplified:
Blue - Royal Regiments
White - non-Royal English & Welsh Regiments
Green - Irish Regiments
Yellow - Scottish Regiments.

Hard to tell if the soldier's collar & cuffs are blue or green.

Sorry best I can do for now, I'll come back to you tonight re-the other photograph when I have chapter & verse in front of me.

I've passed the request on for a higher resolution scan but can only wait to see if anything results.

Thank you very much for this information, I appreciate your help even though I don't know where I'm going with it  ;)

When you say "post 1881" - would there be an end date  also?

Hi Mary,

I'd say between 1881 - 1888.

J.F. Church's studio was based at the Curragh Camp, Kildare, Ireland.

That narrows down the time and the place excellently.  Many thanks
