This is my 1st post.  I would like to know how to find information on Officer rankings. I am researching a possible relative who was a Major in the RAMC.

what do you mean by officer rankings? Do you mean the order in which the went? In that case after enlisted enlisted men and NCOs the ranks went:


Second Lieutenant
Lieutenant
Captain
Major
Lieutenant-Colonel
Colonel
Brigadier

and then you get to the General ranks

What i'm looking for is where to find information on RAMC officers. My research is for a Major.

There is no comprehensive list of RAMC officers. The closest one gets is the annual Army List, or one can look for him on the London Gazette:

You should be able to get his dates of promotion, and any gallentry medals if awarded. However, the LG does give theatre of operations. Researching the RAMC, like the RE and the RA is extremely difficult because unless one knows which parent formation they were assigned to one will need to get his service records.

Some officers are, of course mentioned on the net, or in books, making life easier. If you provide us with a name we can see if we can find anything for you. Did he survive the war? If not, have you looked on the CWGC?

Followed your advice and looked on the London Gazette and found him in the RAMC 1943 promotions.
