Hi Dee  :)

I would say they all date from around the mid-late 1870s.  Hartitzsch and Hanssenn were photographers in Adelaide during that time, I found a little bit of info here:

Hope that helps  :D

Thanks, Prue.......I put Hanssen into the search engine on that site you posted and it says he was active between c 1867 and 1867.  So perhaps the third photo was from around that time.

These photos are proving a real challenge. Earliest I have manage to date are 1864 and latest 1878.
Most of the photos were obviously left in the album as visiting cards. Do you have any idea whether people would have left baby and toddler photographs as visiting cards? Or would they be more likely to be family photographs?

I don't really think anyone used them as visiting cards, really, despite the name - it's just that the photographs were stuck to cards the same size as existing visiting cards.  Certainly people used to collect them (kind of like baseball/football cards) and it was popular to share them with family and friends, so the little kiddies are most likely either family members or children of friends...not that that's very helpful at all  :-\

Just an aside, Hanssen was in partnership with Hartitzsch in 1867 but may have gone on after that on his own.  WHether or not that would have been in Kapunda, where they worked together, I'm not sure.    That final photo could actually be from 1867 but if H&H were partners that year, I wouldn't expect just Hanssen to be on the card.

Cando gave me a great website that has helped me with dating a few of the photographs, but unfortunately neither Hanssen or Otto Von Hartitzsch have any deatils of help on it. And many of the photographs were taken by Otto Von Hartitzsch.  :-\

It certainly helped with the Duryea ones though.  :D
