William Schmidt (topics merged)
« on: Monday 13 August 07 06:04 BST (UK) »
Hi
Am looking for information on a William Schmidt from around Wisconsin who would have been in his early 20's during WW2. He was in Brisbane for a period during the war in 1945 and was known as Bill.I do not know what service he was in but an Aunty who knew him thought it may be the US Marines or Army. There are so many Schmidts that I'm finding it difficult to get anything at all.I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction as to where and how to get information or if anyone may have information. Was told one time his mother was an American Indian descendant.

Regards Bob

In the US WWII Army Enlistment Records, there is a William C. Schmidt born in 1922 in Wisconsin.  His residence was Sheboygan.  He enlisted 18 Jan 1943 in Milwaukee as a private.  He was listed as single with no dependents.  He had 4 years of high school.  He was 64 inches tall and 105 pounds.  Maybe that's the guy you found?

Thank you for that info. We are looking for a needle in a haystack actually.A William Schmidt was here in Australia during WW2 .All we have to go on is the name and he came from Wisconsin, and would have been about 23 in 1945.We found a badge amongst her mother jewellery when she passed away which is a "submarine combat patrol badge" which suggest he could have been in the Navy

Thanks again
Bob

Hi Lissa

We do not know what happened to him. By reports from my wife's Aunty they were planning to marry and my wife's mother being only 17 had consent papers signed and he disppeared and no more contact was made.  Her Aunt at the time was only 14 and cannot remember too much about him but says if she saw a photo would be able to recognize him.
Thank you very much for you help. Will follow through with what you have found so far
