Is there/Was there an Edinburgh Theatre in Scarborough?
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 13:17 BST (UK) »
My Gt.-grandfather advertised his services in The Era on 16th April, 1876, giving his address as "Edinburgh Theatre" with no indication of a town.  Six months later, he was certainly living in Scarborough.  So was there an Edinburgh Theatre in Scarborough at the time, or did he re-locate between April and October?

Thanks for your advice

Must say I've never heard of such a place and I've lived in Scarborough all my life. Though, someone may come along and correct me!! :)

Thanks soulsister.  I'm sure you are right, so where was he, I wonder?

Cheers

Is it possible he was actually at the Edinburgh Theatre in Edinburgh?  As an act he may have been lodging there whilst he was performing there?

That would be a pretty logical solution!  But while I've traced this fellow all over northern England, this would be the first time I have evidence of him straying across the border, so if there is an Edinburgh Theatre anywhere in northern England, it would be more convincing.

I think it must be Edinburgh.

If - as you say - he was advertising his services, he'd have been pretty daft not to put a town in the advert - unless he knew that 'Edinburgh Theatre' was enough, because it was in .. Edinburgh.

I wonder if the local Archives might be able to help you?

Jill

You're right Jill, you've convinced me!   I hope to get to the local archives in the next couple of weeks.

I have found many references to "Edinburgh Theatre" pre 1870. Also listings for Theatre Royal Edinburgh, the latter seemed to be more for serious /classical plays
