Elusive Aunt!!!
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 22:59 BST (UK) »
MAY FRANCES NEAL born 6th September 1919 in West Derby to Abraham Neal & Olive Neal nee Moore.

May was my Aunt & a sister my father never knew he had.  I can not find a death or a marriage for May since accidentally coming across her birth 2 years ago.

My father died 4 weeks ago aged 87 and his wish was that I try and find out as much as I could about her.  I have been trying for 2 years and have got no where so I am now asking for any help or advice to fulfil his wish.

Any ideas please :)

Regards
Gail

Hi Gail,

Where have you looked for her marriage and/or death?  You need to look through the full General Register Office (GRO) index as the later dates aren't yet indexed on freebmd.

I've had a look on Lancashirebmd site but nothing there and I can't see a death under that name from 1984-2006 (of course if she married I wouldn't find it under Neal)

Hi Barbara,

I have been looking on Ancestry but have had no luck :(

My Aunt May would have had 2 older brothers James born 1914 & William born 1916, then 2 younger brothers:  my dad Albert born 1921 & George born 1923.

My dad & William were put into Barnados in 1929 so I was wondering if May Frances Neal had been put up for adoption or something at an early age??

That's very sad.  Have you looked at the Barnados website, you may be able to find out what happened to her by finding your father's records:

Firstly, my condolences.

Secondly, what date range have you been looking for her? If your father had no knowledge, she might have been stillborn or died in infancy?

Hi Barbara,

I have my fathers Barnados papers and nothing was mentioned about May on any of these.  All of his brothers were mentioned though ???

Hi Ayashi,

Thank you for your kind thoughts.  This is a very sad time for me but it has made me more determined to TRY and find any details on her.  My father had me transfering all of the info I had found out about his family onto large sheets of paper which he cherished and he asked me to try and fill in the unknown pieces.

I have looked for deaths right from when she was born until 1929.  It just seems very strange my father could not remember her.

Perhaps look for her under Frances? Or it's possible she took another name altogether- a few of my relatives have changed, like Jane Ann GILL became Ellen...

Some people don't like to make it easy, do they?  ;)

Hi Lamby87

Condolences on the loss of your father.

It may be an idea to get in touch with (Dr) Barnardos again.

As you have May's birth date she may have gone into a completly different
home to your father and his brothers therefore would not be mentioned on his records.
