Can anybody find Joshua Gricks in the census?
« on: Saturday 02 August 08 11:16 BST (UK) »
Please could somebody have a look for this man in the census, he is proving to be very hard to find! :(

Joshua Robert Gricks
b.1875 in Norwich, Norfolk  -on his 1903 marriage cert his occupation is a Fish Merchant. He married in Ely, Cambs. His father was also called Joshua Gricks, also a Fish Merchant.

I have looked in the 1881 and 1901 census, but have had no luck in finding him, any ideas where he may be?

Many thanks,
millerina

Hi Millerina,

He could be this Joshua Ward:

RG11/1940 101 33

(marriage Jun 1876 Norwich 4b 242 Mary Ann Gricks to possibly Joshua Ward)

my thinking too  :)  .... the Gricks name doesnt reappear in Norwich after 1871, when this lass was a Factory girl living in a single room in Pitt Street, Norwich St Augustine

I'd get the Birth Cert of Josh Robt - check its his mother etc..... suspect the fathers name has either been fabricated, or was an older generation relation..

Thanks for your replies!  :)

That looks really interesting, there doesn't seem to be a birth registered for a Joshua Ward, so maybe he is my Joshua Gricks!

Is there any sign of the family in the 1891 census or beyond?

Many thanks for your help!

Thanks Tati :)

That is quite a career change, from shoemaker to fish merchant :-\ ..I'll have to order Joshua Gricks' birth cert to see if that gives any more clues!

Many thanks!

This has probably been spotted anyway, but just in case...

I can see the birth registration of Joshua Robert Gricks (Dec qtr 1875, Norwich) and his subsequent marriage registration (June qtr 1903, Ely).

But there's also this earlier birth registration:
Joshua Ward Gricks (Sept qtr 1867, Norwich) followed by a death registration (March qtr 1868, Norwich).

Bit of a strange coindence eh?

1871 Norwich (St Augustine) Norfolk
RG 10/1808 folio 25 page 4

There were a collection of small households in (what looks like) Dark Entrey Yard off Pitt Street.

One of the occupants, living alone, was a Mary A Gricks - unmarried, age 21, a factory girl born in Martham.

In the very next household, again living alone, was a Joshua Ward - unmarried, age 28, a shoemaker born in Norwich.

The first Joshua Ward Gricks (1867-8) may have been their first (illegitimate child). The middle name 'Ward' is a bit of a giveaway.

Joshua Robert Gricks was probably theirs too!
