William Evans
« on: Thursday 07 August 08 10:53 BST (UK) »

I have now tracked down William Evans born 1879 in Atcham, and his family. He moved to Lancashire in 1901 and married in 1906 to Frances Hannah Snape. She died in 1908. In 1918 he was named in  a divorce case as father of my father, but not on the birth certificate. I don't know where he went after this time. I suspect he might have remarried.

Hi - I only know he was living in Urmston at that time and probably left the district soon after. Sorry there is so little to go on, but having searched for so long, I'm not prepared to give up on finding him yet! ;)

Regards AliceO

Hi Alice,
There are some William Evans listed in the British Phone Books on ancestry - giving addreses.
Also free bmd goes up to 1929 when doing a search for marriages of William Evans in Lancashire  - trouble is there are so many between 1918 and 1929 it is diffcult to know where to start!
Another problem is not knowing whether he stayed in Lancashire, or not.
If we knew an occupation that might help pick him out from the others.
anyway, have a look at the phone books, and Freebmd, and tell me your thoughts.
Paulene :)
Thanks for the info on the cat - I've only ever seen short-haired silver tabby cats before - beautiful one!

Hi Paulene - Thanks so much for your reply. I've looked at Freebmd (which is a great site) and printed off some possible matches. I can only hope he stayed in Lancashire :) I have some phone book listings and will have another look at those. Again thanks for your time and interest.
Regards

Alice,
Just had a thought - his occupation (hopefully it stayed the same ) will be on his marriage certificate to his first wife, or on her death certificate.
Armed with that we can then try to look for him in Directories, etc.
Paulene :)
Anyway, better get to bed - catch up with you tomorrow.

Hi - He was a seed merchant's clerk in 1908, a buyer in 1911 in Urmston. The phone book listings I have are from 1929 - about 20 of them! Various occupations, no buyer, mainly householders although one shows a cashier in Levenshulme!
