Retreat, Clapham
« on: Thursday 07 August 08 23:02 BST (UK) »
The 1841 census has my family living in Retreat, Clapham.  Checking online it appears that this may have been a lunatic asylum, but the list of inhabitants covers several pages, with families and employed people included.

Can anyone help me with info about Retreat?

The census ref is HO 107/1053/7 and the names are James, wife Ann and children William, Henry & George Bushnell.  Also can anyone tell me what the initials in the employment column mean - looks like F S.  James was a coachman.

Many thanks

Christine

Hi

Quote
The census ref is HO 107/1053/7

Can you supply the rest of the reference please - 1053 is the piece number and 7 is the book number but we also need the folio and page number plus the county

I have tried finding them under Bushnell but presume they are mistranscribed

Just found them in Surrey - not London

FS means Female servant and MS is Male servant

I think Retreat is just an ordinary address - probably a road or street as the address is shared by other families.  James is a Male servant

Thanks for that Carole.  Do you think that in 1841 they didn't bother with house numbers as none appear on these census pages?  That's what made me wonder whether it wasn't an ordinary street.

In most 1841 census records I've seen, house numbers aren't given. Sometimes the addresses are very vague, and might refer to an area rather than a road.

If you go back to the census and look back and forth through the pages, you can find out what other streets are nearby and use that to try and work out where 'Retreat' was located.

Hi All
I ve come across a potential relative at the Retreat Clapham who was there with his wife and children in 1841, he had previously been discharge for the Army with ill health. There is an article on studymore.co.uk which lists the place as a lunatic asylum for the 1841 census, it also lists details of some inmates there.
Still unable to prove my relative is the one staying there yet.

You might find the Retreat on here http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Early%20Maps.html/London%201846/Main%20Map%201846.html
I don't know which area Clapham is.
