Look up request please Govan
« on: Friday 08 August 08 16:11 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I'm looking for any details on a fireman John McCoy – Govan Fire Brigade?
Killed at James Watt Dock, Greenock on 7th February 1904.
Supposed to be an article about his death in Greenock Telegraph 8.2.1904, but I can't get up to the Mclean Museum to find more.
Any help or information would be much appreciated
Thankyou
Currently researching the details including Names, Addresses, Date died, Age died, How died, Brigade served and many other details of firefighters that have died as a result of being a firefighter.

Thanks
It looks like that's where my other source got his stuff, found him there after following your link and it's word for word as I printed it above.
"John McCoy, fireman, Govan, killed at James Watt Dock, Greenock on 7th February 1904.
(Greenock Telegraph 8.2.1904)"
Thanks anyway :) I will use that site to check on a few others

That's probably the gist of the obituary from the death notices but the newspaper may, or may not, have printed a report of the accident or inquest at some stage which might give you more details.

There is a brief report in the Scotsman 9 February, 1904:

Fireman Killed In Greenock - John M'Coy, a fireman on board the steamer Kassala. was fatally injured on Sunday night at James Watt Dock. On his way ashore he missed his footing on the side ladder and fell between the vessel's aide and the quay striking his head on the wall. He was picked up speedily, but died shortly afterwards. He belonged to Govan.

Hope this helps

Helen

Thank NellW, you are a diamond
That's sorted my problem out, as he wasn't a "firefighting" fireman.
Saved me going too far down a dead end.
