Henry Hartley - born circa 1816 - Census Lookup please (COMPLETED)
« on: Friday 08 August 08 23:54 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to locate the census records for Henry Hartley, born circa 1816 in Alverley Shropshire.  I think i have found him on the 1871 census for Kingswinford (aged 55 and from Alverley?, Shropshire) living with his wife Ann (aged 37 and from Wolverley?, Worcester) together with his children Eliza (aged 10, Bewdley, Worcester), Elizabeth (aged 8, Kingswinford, Stafford), Henry (aged 6, Kingswinford, Stafford) and Ann (aged 2 Kingswinford, Stafford).

However, i cannot confidently find him on any other census records.  Can anyone help me trace him and his family?

Thanks in advance.

TB

Thank-you for these.

This shows the problems i've had as the information does not appear consistent on each of the census returns.

it is possible that both censuses are right
one explanation could be that ann from the 1841 is his first wife and ann from 1861 is a second wife
the other explantion is that ann from 1841 is not his wife at all but a sister or some other relation
as you most probably know relatioships were not recorded in 1841
will try and find a first marriage for him
i think i have possibly found a second marriage but will re-check.

here is a possible explanation
there is a death of an ann hartley in 1844 in the first qtr. reg, dist, cleobury mortimer. vol.18. page.35
this could have been his first wife
there is a marriage in 1852 of an henry hartley in the 4th qtr. reg, dist. stourbridge. vol.6c. page. 299.
there are two possible wives; ann payne, ellen cooper.
maybe this ann payne could be the second wife.
the only drawback is that she would only have been about 16 at the time of the marriage.
there is a ann payne in the 1841 census in stottesden she is aged 5 so in 1852 would have been 16.
only a theory but not impossible
does anybody else have an opinion on this theory?

Thanks for your research.  It does look as if something else has happened as the information is so varied.  A second marriage may explain the situation!

Lets see if anyone else can shed anymore light on the matter - perhaps the 1851 census would help if it could be located?!

In the meantime can anyone find Henry Hartley's birth on the Parish records?

Thanks

Hi there,
I may be able to able to help !!
Henry was born in Alveley in 1816 son of Thomas & Jane Hartley.  Jane's maiden name was Nicholls.
I have a large family tree for the Nicholls family of Alveley and would be very happy to swap information with you

HARTLEY HENRY was baptised at Quatt Church 28th December 1816 son of Thomas and Jane of Coton Lodge, Alveley

Quatt is the neighbouring Parish to Alveley
Their address "Coton Lodge" tells me they were employees on the Coton Hall estate.
Why was he baptised at Quatt and not Alveley ?? There is a country lane leading directly from the Coton Estate to Quatt church, the trek "up to" Alveley would have been longer, so people from the Coton estate attended Church at Quatt.

How far have you got with the Hartley family ?
Let me know :) :) :) :) :)

Hello

Thanks for the information.  Ive just sent you a private message.

I had suspected that Henry's parents were Thomas Hartley and Jane Nicholls as i noted from the IGI that they were married just before he was born and had other children around that time.  I am very grateful for your confirmation.

I look forward to chatting with you although as i have only just started to research this branch of my family tree (Henry was my 3rd Great Grandfather) i am not sure that i will be of much assistance to you.  I can however help with descendants if you require this information.

Kind Regards

TB
