Samuel Read - Death
« on: Saturday 09 August 08 19:33 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the death/burial of Samuel Read (sometimes Reed), born
1845 in Barham, and married to his cousin Catherine Read in 1866 in
Buckworth. They had three daughters: Naomi, Mercy and Clara who were
admitted to the Huntingdon Workhouse with their mother in 1873. I
can't trace Samuel in 1881or 1891 censuses and Catherine was recorded
as a widow in 1891. Any sightings gratefully received. Salt.

This saves all your problems, I have found this elusive Samuel Reed born 1845 Barham, I went onto the Huntingdonshire Archive/Library, and searched the CALM catalogue, typed in  Samuel Reed, you
have him now at your finger tips, addmission to H.W.H.
criminal record, a photo of him.
refs 1820/78, page 86.
refs 4440/367/page89?
he may have been transported, who knows, but if you do find him, please let me know, researching
for a female.D/F

I'm not at all convinced that this is the same Samuel Reed. The image on CALM isn't very clear, but the gaol record seems to be dated July 1875 and he seems to be single aged 21 born Hail Weston, a baker, although this age probably relates to his sentence on 26 July 1869 (12 months for embezzlement). He should be 30 married born Barham.

In 1881 living in Sneinton Notts is Samuel Read 31 married b Hail Weston, a baker, with wife Mary Ann 25, and daughters Eliza 4, Susan 2 and Irena 1, all b Peterborough. This Samuel looks to be the one in Huntingdon Gaol Habitual Criminals register in 1875

So Marylyn's elusive Samuel remains elusive!

The same CALM catalogue shows that Naomi Reed was admitted twelve times into Huntingdon Union Workhouse between 1873 and 1883. Samuel was admitted in 1862, and Catherine Reed of Buckworth parish, born 1847 was admitted eleven times between 1873 and 1881. So it looks as though Samuel had either died by 1873 or had done a runner.

Does anyone have the birth certificates of the three children? Was Samuel named as the father on each of them?

David

Later - a tree on Ancestry has a note, presumably taken from one of the workhouse admission records, that Samuel deserted his wife on 2 Jan. Doesn't say which year. 1873? As I suspected, he may have done a runner. I've seen other deserted wives who've described themselves as widows in censuses. Mind you, by 1891 when she was said to be a widow, he'd been gone for more than the necessary 7 years so she could have had him declared dead, and so widow might have been an accurate legal description, even though he could still have been alive and living in another part of the country. London was the favourite to get lost in

Hi,

Do we know the latest on Samuel Read/Reed....

Samuel was my 3 x great grand uncle and I am off the the Huntingdon Records Office with Samuels 3 x great grandson....

I'd appreciate any up-dates please...

I will write on here what we find anyway.

My cousin has the marriage cert of Samuel and Catherine... her father is not noted.

Catherine and Samuel were believed to be first cousins.... Samuels father Joseph and Catherines father John were brothers... Witnesses... David Reed & Sarah Jane Chester. Samuel noted as minor...

He has also seen the birth records of the 3 girls, Samuel is noted as father on them all.

This info came from Sue Parnell... who looked at the workhouse registers...

From Sue Parnell: Catherine Read wife of Samuel Read b 1845...... Admitted to workhouse several times between 1873 - 1882, recorded as an industrious woman, 15/2/1873. Inmate of Huntingdon workhouse stating she was deserted by her husband on Jan 2 (1873)

I think this is Catherine Read and her parents... Her father died in 1848...

Unlikely as transportation from Britain/Ireland officially ended in 1868, although it had become uncommon several years earlier, and Samuel was the named father of a daughter born in Cambs c 1871.

Hello

Thought I'd chip in as the original request for info on Samuel Read in August 2008 was mine.  I'm pretty certain he was not the Samuel Read admitted to Huntingdon gaol - different family. Having looked at the workhouse record for his wife & children I suspect he just took off, changed his identity & disappeared or died in a ditch somewhere. He and Catherine were very young cousins - and expecting a baby - when they married. Today we'd call them dysfunctional. Sad, but probably very common.
