Pratts in Tonbridge Wells
« on: Sunday 10 August 08 20:48 BST (UK) »
My fiance's grandmother, Beatrice Gladys Pratt, was born in 1906 in Tonbridge Wells.  I know nothing yet about her parents or family, and she died in 1933 when her only son was about 2 years old.

Does anyone know of any Pratt families in Tonbridge Wells?

thanks.

Hi Lizzy

You could try the Tunbridge Wells FHS

http://www.tunwells-fhs.co.uk/

I also know that between Orpington and  Sevenoaks - near where the M25 goes through at Junction 4 -  is a place called Pratt's Bottom so perhaps the North West Kent FHS   ( http://www.nwkfhs.org.uk/index.htm ) may be able to help.

Glen
Bezant (London/Suffolk), West (London/Essex), Walker (Yorkshire), Phillips (West Country - believed Bristol area), Tibbetts (Warwickshire), Armstrong (Co Fermanagh), Harvison (Co Wexford), Neeb (Germany), Becker (Germany), Jakobsson (Finland). Kanneworff (Germany and Denmark)

Lizzy. Not sure if you meant your question literally or not  :P

If you did, then why not try the 'phone book?

http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/search/residential/search.publisha

If you enter 'Pratt" as the name and 'Tunbridge Wells' as the place you get 12 answers. Of these I would say 4 are not strictly "Tun Wells", but it still leaves 8 possibles.

Of course, if you're really looking for people in  "Tonbridge Wells" you won't have much luck - note the important spelling difference! Very important to those of us born in the area  ;D

On a more serious note - it shouldn't be too hard to trace back from Beatrice's death etc. Is Pratt her married or maiden name?

Lizzy - ignore that last bit - I think I've worked it out for myself.

Births Sep 1906  - Pratt  Beatrce Gladys - Tonbridge  2a 867
(That spelling mistake made it harder to find for a moment)
Tonbridge Registration district included Tunbridge Wells in 1906 (in fact until 1979)

Interestingly, the same reference includes:
Pratt  John Henry     Tonbridge  2a 867

Could be a coincidence, a cousin or perhaps a twin?

From this reference you can get her birth certificate, which will give you her parents details. You'll need that to go further, as there are quite a few Pratt marriages in the same district in the 5 or so years before 1916.

Thank you, nigelo.  Maybe Beatrice had a twin.  Hers is the only line of my fiance's tree that I haven't traced back any further - this is because I need to persuade him that we need to shell out £7 for her birth certificate!  ;D

I'm not sure how long Beatrice's surname has had such unfortunate connotations.  If it did, maybe she was relieved to change it!  ;D
