KITCHEN - St Ives
« on: Monday 11 August 08 20:04 BST (UK) »
Hello
I was wondering if there was anyone out there that could give me some assistance please? This is my first post, so please forgive me if it isn't totally clear. I did read the instructions, but it seems more difficult when you come to write it down.

My great-great-grandfather was William Henry Kitchen DOB circa 1869. He married Margaret Annie Kemp in June 1892 and they lived at Academy place Penzance. They had children: William Henry, George, Harriet Jane, Annie and Lila.
Wm Henry senior was killed between 1905 and 1920. They were fishing families. After his death several of them emigrated to USA and my great grandmother married John Wilson in Penzance then moved to Fleetwood, Lancashire.

Before I can trace any further back I am struggling with a couple of things. Whilst looking on census I cannot find  conclusive info regarding Wm Henry senior and also on BMD records. I  have found some transcribed info on 2 WH Kitchens. The first baptised 16-8-1870 c/o Jane Williams (single) of Maddern and possible DOB 24/03/1870
The second was baptised 14/07/1870 son of Harriet Jane Clarke (single) and aged 12months. I have my opinion that the latter maybe correct as the following year, Harriet married Henry Kitchen  and on WHK's marriage details his father is Henry Kitchen fisherman and my great grandmother's name was Harriet Jane which kind of follows with the naming tendencies. I am aware that there are quite a lot of Kitchen's in this area and am asking if there is any enlightenment lol.
I also think that he died at sea.

I would love to hear from anyone with any possible info.
Thanks for looking
Annie

Hello Annie

Do you have William Henry's marriage certificate?

If not, you can see a transcript of his marriage here

http://west-penwith.org.uk/ivesmar12.htm

This indicates that his father was Henry Kitchen a Fisherman.  He might, of course, have made up a name for his father.

Have been doing some more checking.

The Cornwall opc site has the baptism on 14 July 1870  of William Henry Kitchen Clarke son of Harriet. I think therefore that you are right  :)

But where are they in the censuses? Will take another look.

I had no luck finding Harriet and son William yesterday on the censuses. However, this could be the reason

Deaths Dec 1879
Kitchen  Harriet Jane  32  Penzance  5c 187

Henry might have married again.  There is a marriage in the Penzance District in 1880 and in the 1881 census there is a Henry Kitchen with wife Elizabeth Ann living in Newlyn who has an 11 year old son William Henry plus some other children. They are still together in 1891 although William Henry is not with them.

Hi Barbara
many thanks for all your hard work and help.
It kind of confirms the info that I had come up with. I found that Henry Kitchen looks to have married Elizabeth Ann Pollard in 1880.
Our family was predominantly Penzance St Ives, there is another William Henry Kitchen born a similar time and follows the Newlyn link, so I was wary when the macth I followed went towards Newlyn. But it is looking that i may have been on the right tracks.
Thanks for the welcome - I cannot believe how addictive this is all becoming and I love the contact with everyone.
Very good wishes
Annie

Glad the info I found has helped Annie.

Just checking, but you do realise that St Ives and Penzance are 2 different towns?  One is on the North coast and the other on the South. St Ives is in the Registration District of Penzance.

I live in St Ives so if you need to know anything about the town I should be able to help.

Hi Barbara
yes thanks for that. Everything that I have ever been told has said St Ives.
My great Grandmother was baptised in St Ives and lived at Academy Place - on her marriage cert in 1920 her address was Fore Street, St Ives - where I think the Kemp family lived of whom her mother Margaret Annie Kemp belonged.
Cheers
Annie
