Hi Soley

Here is Emily's family in 1901:

The Common, Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire

William WILLIAMS head mar 40 gardener b.Preston on Wye, Herefordshire
Eliza wife 39 b.Madley Herefordshire
Edith M dau 10 b.Eaton Bishop Herefordshire
George H son 8 b.Eaton Bishop
Clara J dau 6 b.Eaton Bishop
Herb...? ? W son 4 b.Abbey Dore? Herefordshire
Ethel F dau 2 b.Abbey Dore? Herefordshire

RG13/2484 folio 21 page 1

Do you have an address for Emily's baby's birth in 1916?  I was just wondering if she had the baby at home with her family or elsewhere?  Just to get some kind of clue as to where it is best to start looking ........... :)

Hi Soley

I would think that the best place to start would be to try and find out exactly who was living at Yew Tree Cottage, Abbey Dore about 1916.  The main local libary should have street diretories for the area or be able to tell you where they were if they don't have them.  These street directories list head of household and you can work backwards and forwards (they were normally published each year) to see how long the family lived there.

Another good idea might be to try and locate the electoral registers (again try the main local library) from 1918 for that address and these will list all men over 21 and women over 30 who were elligible to vote.  It might be a good idea to try this just to make sure that you have the right family in the census returns as I assume that you don't have anything to confirm Emily's age as yet.  There were an awful lot of WILLIAMS families in Herefordshire!

Does it not say where 34 North Place was?  Was it in Abbey Dore or was it somewhere else?  Might be on the top of the certificate.  UD just means urban district ie. in a town or whatever

So was the baby named Herbert Griffin WILLIAMS son of Emily WILLIAMS?  Does it give a second name for Emily or not?

...and then there is the unscientific approach!!

Had a look at the 1901 to see if there were any GRIFFINs living near Emily at that time.  Abbey Dore is a tiny village, but not far from her "roots".  Suspect the place of birth is in Hereford itself, try multimap.com.

The eye alighted on one Henry Herbert GRIFFIN, then aged 17, born Norton Cannon and living in Dilwyn in 1901.  Probably just a coincidence?  Dilwyn is near Leominster.

There was a 52 year old Charles GRIFFIN (prob not the father) but who was born in Eaton Bishop, so there were obviously some GRIFFINs locally at some time.

There was also a family living at Kentchurch (v near by)with a 9 year old son.

As I say, very unreliable way of looking at things!!

Another thought: do you have partner's nan's wedding cert?  Just a chance the father may be named on there, rather than the stepfather.
