Wootton, Huntingdon
« on: Wednesday 26 January 05 17:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm not sure if I'm posting this on the correct page but wasn't sure which one to use.
I'm trying to find my grandmother's family.

My grandmother - ELLEN COLLYER/COLLIER was born on 21.3.1880 in Camberwell, London.  On her birth certificate her mother is named as MARY WOOTTON.
I have these on 1881 Surrey census where is states Mary Wife b. Huntingdon.  I've tried finding her birth and marriage to HENRY COLLYER but can't find either.

Could someone please point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance

Hi Sandie

Where have you looked for the marriage which, judging by the age of the eldest child in 1881, would have been around 1863/4?  FreeBMD has hardly started transcribing marriages for these years so you will need to check either the GRO microfiches or use 1837online.  This is the vital piece of information that you need, as the certificate should then enable you to get fathers' names.

Unfortunately Hunts is not well covered in the IGI, which shows nothing for Mary Wootton.

Have you found any of the family members in the 1871/91 or 1901 censuses to see if a more accurate birthplace for Mary is mentioned, as Huntingdon quoted in 1881 could easily mean the county, particularly as Henry's place of birth is merely given as Surrey.  I looked but could see nothing obvious, so possibly the name Collyer has been enumerated/transcribed incorrectly.

On FreeBMD there is a death of Mary Collyer in Camberwell in the Sept quarter 1888 aged 47 which might be her.

Just a few ideas although I'm sure others will be able to add more

Regards

David

Hi David,

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have tried 1837 online and checked for years 1860 through to 1865, but no joy - although it could just be me, the eyes go after a while.

I have checked the other census returns for Surrey, Sussex and Hunts. and tried both known spellings - Collier/Collyer, but nothing.  The only family member I did find was my grandmother, Ellen, who was then married.  I just don't know where else to look.

Thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated.
