1861 Census Guiltcross Workhouse
« on: Wednesday 13 August 08 22:51 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone please help with the following:

On the 1861 Census for the Norfolk, Guiltcross Workhouse, Kenninghall, I can only find names for children, females and elderly males. Where are the names (lists) of adult working males? The missing Census details do not show any missing pieces for this area.
Part of my ancestors (female and children) are shown but not the adult males

Thank you
Jack

For Blue-Spirit & yonderpeasant.

Thank you for the information.

The name that I am looking for is Robert Adams b1819.

When I search the 1861 Census for the Guiltcross Workhouse, I get less than 50 inmates. Knowing that often the number of inmates was nearer 200, I assume that the bulk of working males are missing.

If anyone can access more than the two census pages that I can find, can you please tell me if Robert Adams is shown. His wife Elizabeth, born Banham, and several of his children are shown.

Thank you
Jack

Hello Jack1601

I have looked at all the census pages for 1861 Guiltcross Workhouse ,9 in all showing  about 200 inmates.  There is no Robert Adams , perhaps he found a job out of Norfolk.

The Adams listed are
Elizabeth   aged 38 born in Banham Norfolk   Agr. Lab.
Reuben      aged  11 born Huntingdonshire ( looks like Yaxley)
Susannah   aged  10 born              "
Mary           aged     8 born  Amsterdam Holland
Alfred         aged      2 born  Kenninghall
Sophia        aged     1 born           "

I am sorry I can't be of more help

Hi amber39 & yonderpeasant

Thank you for the information. I have a copy of the 1861 Census showing Elizabeth and the children and also details of her remarriage to Bugg. For some unknown reason I have not been able to access all the 9 census records that amber39 mentions, so I am very grateful for the confirmation that Robert is not listed.

I realised that Robert was probably dead prior to 1867, when Elizabeth remarried, but cannot find a death record. His brother James emigrated to Australia and one of his daughters was born in Amsterdam, so I have even looked there for his death record. On his son's, Alfred's birth certificate, no father is listed. When Alfred marries, he lists his father Robert Adams, Sheppard.

Thank you for taking the time to try to help

Jack
