Sleaford derelict building-Completed thank you
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 16:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

Not really relevant to my family history but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the derelict building was that is owned by the Health Authority alongside the railway line as you enter Sleaford Station from the Skegness direction.

Thanks
Rosie

Hi Sarah

Thanks for looking but no it isn't the place. I have tried searching for asylums/workhouses etc as that is what I thought it looked like but can't find any mention.  I spotted it on my way home yesterday and just wondered what it had been, it was quite big and next to the railway line just before entering Sleaford station.

Thanks
Rosie :)

The Workhouse was on Eastgate.

Can you identify where your building is on this photo?

It sounds like the old Bass Maltings.
The ideas put forward for its use do not tally with the city fathers ideas cause they don't have a stake in it --- so for 25 yrs to my knowledge it has gone downhill. It had a fire in part a few yrs ago but unfortunately, in this case, the fire service was too efficient. I believe some annoraks have had it listed so another worthless relic requires a fortune spending on it.

I saw the Maltings on my OS map ... looking again at the photo, the extent of the fire is apparent

Thank you very much Beady and GeoffE thats the one.   ;D

It just looked interesting from the train though I can imagine that the locals may think any money spent on it is a waste but personally I like to see the results of restoration on old buildings, shame it is taking so long to decide what to do with it.  I was sure it had Health Authority notices on it so sorry if I mislead you, probably security firm notices.

Thanks
Rosie  :)

Hi
I can confirm its not Rauceby Hospital, I worked there in the 80s, in fact the train from Grantham into Sleaford use to run through the edge of the grounds of the Hospital. Its just about all gone now and is a housing estate.

The building you refer too is the Old Bass building, shame really.

Thanks Jayne

I must admit that I didn't spot anything at Rauceby, obviously looking elsewhere at the time.  I'd been to visit OH's family in the Louth area but they are 'newcomers' to Lincolnshire.  I haven't yet tracked any of my family to the Rauceby area yet, they were in Lincoln in the early 1800's.

Anyway, It is definately the Maltings I saw, an interesting building  :)
