Battle of Jutland death
« on: Tuesday 19 August 08 07:12 BST (UK) »
Hi, can someone please help me or point me in the right direction.

My pop's brother was killed at the Battle of Jutland, he was a 1st Boy but I don't know on which ship.  I have checked the Battle of Jutland casulaties website and the CWGC site but I can not find hide or hair of him.  My uncle old me Pop said 4 members of his family died on the same ship, cousins etc and Mum recalls a postcard Pop had of a senitaph with his brothers name and the names of the other family members but it has been lost over the years. My pop's brother's name was Cyril Albert B. Beer, he was born 1899 and was from St. Osyth Essex.

Thanks

Hi Valda, thanks for your reply.  Sorry, I may not have been too clear in my post.  I have this census entry for Cyril and his family, it's his death at the Battle of Jutland I can't find any reference to.  And yes, the surname gets mispelt a lot, it can make things a little harder to find.
Cheers

Yes you did make yourself clear, I was merely pointing out to anyone else who can help you, that they need to check under the three known variations of the spelling. Having said that I already have on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website and The National Archives online index of navy seamen. Nothing comes up.

Royal Naval Seamen (1853 - 1923)

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/royal-navy-service.asp

Could he have served in another surname?

Hi Valda, he could have served under another name, his father is unknown on his birth certificate but he might have known his fathers name and used it, also his mother had married, his step father was Harry Mann.  Mum says the senitaph most definately had the name Cyril Beer/e on it but she can't remember if it was Beer or Beere.
I too have searched every which way at the national archives even only putting in the birth place with no name and I still can't find a match.

Thanks for your help

What were the parents names? That may help in tracking him down using http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search14-21.php

St. Osyth in Essex has a war memorial- could this be the one Cyril is listed on?:
www.stosyth.gov.uk/default.asp?calltype=armisticeday&show=memorial
"Cowley Park, a recreation ground of 7 acres, situated in the centre of the village, was presented in 1920 by Mrs. M. B. Cowley, former owner of the Priory: a pavilion was erected in 1927: at the entrance to the ground is a war memorial, which contains the names of 57 men who fell in the Great War, 1914-18."
Contact addresses here:
www.stosyth.gov.uk/default.asp?calltype=britishleigon&show=memorial
or you could contact the local library or historical society.

My great uncle was also killed at Jutland. His name is on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial although he was from Suffolk. I also understand that there were similar memorials in the form of an obelisk at Plymouth and Chatham which recorded the names of those who died at sea and therefore had no known grave ( this may be the photo you had in the family). He might be on one of those
