E J Wyse - A look up at Kew, please
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 07:33 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Firstly I would like to thank the Great War Forum and Ann Mc, here on RC, for their help with tracing my Grandfather's time in the army.

E J Wyse entered the theatre of war at some point after April 1917 and the only way to find anything more is a visit to Kew. This is not possible as I am in Spain and am unable to get to London.  So I am hoping someone might be able to look him up for me.

This is the information gained about my Grandfather  Ernest John Wyse
Royal Berkshire Regiment
4817

29. 11. 1879 Born Maidenhead Berkshire
26. 01. 1897 Joined The Royal Berkshire Regiment. 4817
13. 02. 1898 – 19. 10. 1902 South Africa King & Queen medals with clasps
30. 10. 1902 – 25. 01. 1904 Egypt
28. 10. 1904 Transferred to the Army A Reserve, Section B
05. 10. 1907 Married Ada Harding Maidenhead
25. 01. 1909 Discharged on Termination of Engagement

Oxon and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry
8727 and 241009

Number 8727 83rd Provisional Battalion
This number could be a Territorial Number
1916 approx Stationed at East Mersea Essex . Rank Sergeant
Jan. 1917 The 83rd became the 10th OBLI and remained in the UK

Number 241009
Apr. 1917 This number was from the renumbering of the Territorials and from the bloc allocated to the 10th OBLI
Nov. 1917 10th OBLI were disbanded
18. 04. 1918 I have the official paper that shows he was made up to Warrant Officer Class 11
1926 Tuberculosis (Sanatorium near Henley)
21 May 1931 Death

The Medal Reference is L/106 B21 Page 4292

As he received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, which are on the MIC, he must have served abroad.  But with whom?

I wish to find out more about when and where he served and therefore am asking if anyone would be prepared to look him up at Kew. If not can someone recommend a reliable researcher who is known to them and could find this information at Kew for me.

Thank you,
Very best wishes,
Abiam

Hi Abiam

You will have to wait for Ancestry to publish the surviving records with surnames beginning W. Failing that you can ask your local FH/LDS Centre for a copy of the microfilm containing Wyse in the series WO363 to be sent from Kew under the A2A scheme. These are what Ancestry are publishing.

Ken,

Thanks for the advice but I live too far away from the nearest LDS.  I know it's a lot to ask but if you don't ask you don't get!  I will note the numbers you have given me and will have to be patient.  Not easy!

Regards,
Abiam

Surely/hopefully someone will be visiting Kew in the not too distant future and will  seek out the Medal Reference Roll No:

L/106 B21 Page 4292

for you, to see if it reveals which actual battalion of (presumably) the Oxs & Bucks LI that Ernest Wyse served with in France.

Your thread reveals that the 10th OBLI remained in the UK, and also that in Nov. 1917 10th OBLI were disbanded.

I assume that is the main thrust of your question is - if not the 10th Bn, which Battalion number of the Ox & Bucks Battalions did Ernest serve with in France?

Hope someone can come to your aid.  :P
